Wolves 'Best Time' In Meet Of ChampionsPublished Wednesday, May 15, 1996 in the Nevada County PicayuneThe 1996 7AA Conference championship and state runner-up track and field squad was well represented in the 39th annual Meet of Champions last Wednesday at Cabot. Four of the five athletes competing ran their best relay splits of the season. Consequently the Wolves ran their best time of the year in the 4x800 and 4x400 relays. The original format of this meet had the top three place finishers automatically qualifying for the Arkansas-Oklahoma All Star meet, but some officials have re-arranged this procedure, so at press time the Wolves were not sure of their status, according to coach Eddie Jackson. This meet will be held at Ft. Smith Southside on Saturday, May 18, and will put the best four from Arkansas against the best four from Oklahoma in each event. "The Wolves finished third in the 4x800 and fourth in the 4x400, but the only invitation we received was for senior John Cornelius to be on an all-star relay team," Jackson said. "Listed below is a re-cap of the events we competed in at Cabot," Jackson said. "If, in fact, any of the Wolves compete Saturday the results will be in next week's edition." 4x800 relay: -- Channing Butler and Jason Morrow had their personal record split and Cedric Flemons and John Cornelius had a good effort for a school record of 8:17. 110 hurdles: -- Channing Butler had some trouble by hitting several hurdles, but did a great job of getting back in the race and ran another 14.6. 400 sprint: -- John Cornelius ran a 49.8 in spite of a bad ankle and stomach illness. 4x400 relay: -- Cedric Flemons and Rashad Johnson had personal record splits, but this squad (including Butler and Cornelius), who has worked so hard for so long, fell one tenth of a second short of the PHS school record. The second and third leg was interferred with by the Conway runners (no disqualification called) and this possibly affected the team's time by two or three tenths.
