Classy Moments from GMSPublished Wednesday, May 15, 1996 in the Gurdon TimesWe are so busy at Gurdon Middle School, we are having trouble finding enough time to get everything done that we need to complete. It seems as though time is simply flying by us. A program on train safety was presented to all the students and so much information was shared. The dangers of playing around the railroad tracks may take on a more inportant meaning. Everyone enjoyed an assembly presented by the Spanish classes from Gurdon High School and Mrs. Smithey's class that explained the meaning of Cinco De Mayo, a holiday celebrated in Mexico. The program was presented in Spanish and several skits were very entertaining. Mrs. Smithey's class had decorated the hall and the stage with big paper flowers, like those in Mexico, that were made by her students. One student, Octovio Leon, sang a song in Spanish, of which we all enjoyed. The Junior Beta Club provided a wonderful sandwich lunch for the teachers. It sure was nice, as well as delicious. The Gurdon Junior High Quiz Bowl did a good job in the completion. They won the first round against Bismarck, but lost in the second round. Andrew Wilson, Martin Downey, Whitney Hogue, B.J. Griffin and Flint King really faced some most difficult questions. We are proud of them, and they are first place to us. Monday, May 20, the GMS Student Council Assembly will have the installation of its new officers. This will be held at 1:00 in the auditorium at GMS and you are invited to attend. The last band concert for this school year and everyone enjoyed it. Mr. Burson has brought out hidden talent from these band students. A good job. A great evening was enjoyed by all. Wish you could have seen Mrs. Gattis talking to Nolan Richardson at Bud Walton Arena on May 4. Mrs. Clingan hugged his neck and thanked him for calling her son, Steven, while he was in isolation after receiving a bone marrow transplant. The call has very precious memories for her. Thursday, May 23, the awards assembly will be conducted at 9:00 in the auditorium. Please consider this your personal invitation to attend. Mrs. Clingan's 8th graders were hoping she wouldn't, but she did. They had them recite the Gettsburg Address. She is convinced that we have excellent speech makers at GMS. This school year is about to come to an end and we really don't know where the time has gone. We want you to know that we do appreciate your support. If you have enjoyed this article and would like to have it continued next school year, let us know, as we try to stay busy making those Classy Moments at GMS.
