GHS Students HonoredPublished Wednesday, May 15, 1996 in the Gurdon TimesAwards, accolades and honors were the order of the day for the Gurdon High School Awards Assembly, Wednesday, May 9. Held in the GHS cafetorium, students were presented scholarships, along with athletic letters and classroom awards. Quincy Charles was the "big winner" as he received the First State Bank Scholarship, a scholarship from Henderson State University, the HSU alumni scholarship and was honored by the Clark County Youth Development Committee, along with Camellia Cooper, Cliff Hunter and Marcus Wright. The classes of Whitfield and Kuhn were honored for their participation in Black History. Lori Hathcoat and Jared Smith also earned HSU scholarships. Shannon Wells earned a scholarship from Southern Arkansas University, while Jimmy Don Thomas earned one from the University of Arkansas at Monticello. John Anderson, Jared Smith and Shea Wetherington were bestowed scholarships from the University of Central Arkansas. Jaime Wells was presented the CD&E scholarship by Freddie Horne, while Teresa Griffin gave the Eric Griffin Scholarship to Hope and Wade Griffin. Jared Smith also took home the Cabe Scholarship, as well as they Bridgestone-Firestone Corporation scholarship, which is presented to children of company employees. Brian McGalliard and Wetherington were honored as Army Reserve National Scholar Athletes. Hope Griffin took the Horizon Bank scholarship, while Anderson went home with the Rotary Club scholarship this year. Jennifer Guthrie and Phillip Porcelli earned scholarships from Ouachita Baptist University, with Jennifer Runyan being presented the Senior Kadohadacho Club Citizen Award. John Anderson and T.J. Johnson received scholarships from Central Baptist College. The Presidential Academic Fitness Award went to Wetherington, Anderson and Smith. Eric Allen earned the AEGIS award, with Kelli Craig the alternate. Stacie Moseley will be attending the Arkansas School of Math and Science, while the Girl's State delegates are Cassidy Allen, Melanie Wilson, Amanda Calley and Wendy Warren. Andrew Bell, Melanie Wilson and Marcus Wright all had perfect attendance during the year. First year freshman academic letters went to Bethany Cooper, Camelia Cooper and Christopher Wise. Second year, second letter honors went to Marc Crawley, Rusty Freeman, Moseley, Kara Thomas and Adrianne Porcelli. Second year, first letter awards went to Kimberly Robertson, while a third year, third letter went to Terrie Brown. Melanie Wilson earned a junior second letter, while Kadre Clark took home a junior first letter. Jared Smith earned a senior fourth letter award, while Lori Hathcoat earned her first letter as a senior. The top 10 seniors for the year were, in order: Smith, Hathcoat, Shanna Wells, Charles, Anderson, Jimmy Don Thomas, Jennifer Guthrie, McGalliard, Wetherington and Phillip Porcelli. Classroom awards in the agriculture class went to: Shane McBride, ag mechanics; Lacy Walters and Phillip McGuirt, ag science and technology; Lori Thomas, forestry and farm structures; Jim White, animal science and ag leadership; and Leslie Smithpeters, welding. Josh Griffin earned a physical science honor.
