Convention AttendedPublished Wednesday, May 22, 1996 in the Gurdon TimesThe Women of the Church of God (WCG) held their annual state convention May 3 and 4 at Snow Springs Campground in Hot Springs. The theme for this year was "Treasure this Community". The guest speaker was Ann Brandon, program coordinator of the national WCG. She is the daughter of Brother Charles and Bernell Sandlin of Gurdon. Those attending the convention from the Gurdon church were Bernell Sandlin, Thelma Mizell, Eulah Wilson, Janet Toland, Royetta Wright, Doris Vance, Shirley Smithpeters and Velvet Gonzales. The Gurdon church participated by providing beverages for the evening banquet and decorations for the breakfast table the folowing day. Janet Toland closed the Friday evening banquet by singing "No Other Word for Grace but Amazing." The Women of the Church of God in Gurdon held their monthly meeting Monday, May 13. The lesson was presented by Bernell Sandlin and was entitled, "The Community: God's Miracle Gro." The focus of this meeting was to celebrate spiritual birthdays. As each member held a sunflower seed, she reflected on how her spiritual growth depends upon cultivating and nuturing through God's word and God's people, just as the seed needs to be nutured to grow. Each member planted her seed to be used by God by placing it in the offering along with her monetary gift. The meeting was closed by saying a prayer for the offering and the continued spiritual growth of each member. The officers for the local WCG were elected during a previous meeting. The officers for 1996 are Vivian Spurill, president; Shirley Smithpeters, vice president; Rhonda Spurill, secretary; Eulah Wilson, treasurer; Bernell Sandlin, spiritual life coordinator, Velvet Gonzales, friendship, and Janet Toland and Doris Vance, co-historians.
