Classy MomentsPublished Wednesday, September 8, 1999 in the Gurdon TimesThe first junior high football game will be history when you read this. We are proud of our players, as they have practiced in the heat and worked hard to be the best they can be. Excitement is felt about the first game to be played at the new football field September 10th. Although it will be a senior high game, just planning to be there for history in the making is fun. The new field looks so nice, and those bleachers, wow! Hopefully each of you can attend the game. Support the band while you enjoy the new concession stand. If you looked at various surrounding schools, you are not going to find one that has a football field as nice as we have at Gurdon. Although we are proud of the new buildings and faculties, we want to save the history of the past. All the Gurdon graduates form 1929 until the new high school became occupied, this concerns you. Remember the graduating pictures of each year that hung in the hall of the old high school building? Those pictures are being preserved, but help is needed to make that task a reality. Displays are being planned that will make the pictures easy to see as well as protect them, but it is an expensive project. It will cost $4,000 to be able to purchase the displays and get the photographs placed on new mountings. So far $1,264.96 has been raised. Bunny Childres is in charge of collecting recipes from GHS graduates and making an Oldies But Goodies cookbook. The sale of each cookbook will go to the GMS savings for the picture fund at First State Bank in Gurdon. Now, Bunny needs recipesyours. Let's all help out in this special project. Share not only the recipes, but give a little tid-bit about yourself, such as when you graduated, how you got the recipes, if a teacher, what subject, remember a time, etc. All of those little added comments will just add to the memories of the past. We express appreciation to Bunny Childres for taking the time to get this cookbook together. She is planning to have the cookbook ready for sale at the Forest Festival. Help is needed. You can drop off the recipes at Billy Wells Florist in Kuhn's Hardware, or send them to Ann Clingan at Cabe Middle School. This could make wonderful Christmas gifts, not only as a cookbook, but lots of historical comments as well. Mrs. Butler's fifth grade science classes are studying the living and non-living things in our ecosystem, which are needed to survive. Each student took a living thing from its natural habitat, such as a chicken, quail, parrot, turtle, walking stick, grasshopper, spider, frog, lizard, fish and several other variations, and actually brought them into the classroom. Their tasks were to keep them alive for five days while observing each and logging all activities before releasing them back to the natural habitat on Friday. The students will share their results on how each living thing received energy, and the how each adapted to its new environment and natural activities. Wow! When asked to come see the zoo, Mrs. Butler really did mean just that. Such a great way to enjoy learning! We are enjoying the school year and have great plans for future days as we continue to make those Classy Moments at CMS. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
