Flemons Continues Running Well; Finished In Top 10 At Decathlon

Published Wednesday, May 22, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

Prescott was well represented in the annual high school decathlon last week at Cabot.

Wolves' Cedric Flemons continued his great athletic year by placing in the top ten in his first experience with the grueling ten-event competition.

Flemons was an all-district and all-state performer in football, the leading scorer for the Wolves' track and field squad, and displayed his athletic skills by competing against some of the top athletes in the state for two days.

Senior John Cornelius was working toward this event, but his injured ankle seemed to get worse so he decided not to enter at the last minute and sophomore Jason Morrow jumped at this opportunity. Being the competitor he is Morrow packed up and made the trip.

It was a great experence for him, coach Eddie Jackson said.

Morrow was in the 40th place after day one, but jumped 20 places with a good solid day in the tougher events. He vaulted 12 feet then stepped on the track and finished with a 4:57 mile run. This broke the PHS decathlon 1600 record held for over 20 years by Clark Morman, a decathlon winner for PHS.

He finished with over 6,000 points, which is excellent for a sophomore with no previous decathlon experience, Jackson said.

Flemons edged out another athlete by one point for the 10th place trophy.

Because of the Wolves' training program of running quarters, both athletes competed well in the 400 and 1600. These events as well, as the pole vault, cost many competitors valuable points.

Listed below are the performance and points accumulated for these young athletes.
