County Mourns Loss Of Valuable Leader and Volunteer (cont)

Published Wednesday, May 22, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

Cross spent a lot of time volunteering for what he believed in, and that was to provide the best service and protection for the people of the county.

"He will definitely be missed by the people here and across the state."

Sue Henry, widow of former Nevada County Judge John Henry, was too emotional to speak much of Cross.

Cross and her husband worked hard together to improve Nevada County, going to countless meetings together, as well as socializing with one another's families.

"He was a dear friend who will be missed," she said. "He did a lot of good things for Nevada County."

Frank Faulkner, with the Emmet VFD, said Cross would be sorely missed.

"If we had more like him in the county," he said, "we'd be better off. He helped bring people together, put them on task and got things done.

"A lot will miss him more than most realize. He was always there and always available."

Faulkner said Cross was always full of life and never pretentious. "He treated everybody the same. He was a good fellow. I lost a close personal friend.

"The community lost a good friend as did the county. He was a community leader.

"He was real."
