Four Curley Wolves HonoredPublished Wednesday, May 29, 1996 in the Nevada County PicayuneWith high school athletics officially over for 1996, members of the Curley Wolves baseball team brought home their honors. Four members of the squad earned accolades by being named to the 7AA All-District team based on their efforts on the field during the regular season. Those four, Jerome Fulks, Montra Montgomery, Charlie Rockett and Barrett Yates helped lead the Wolves to the state playoffs for the first time in school history. In addition, Montgomery was selected as a member of the Class AA State Baseball All-Tournament Team. This selection was based on votes by coaches of teams playing in the state tournament and on the player's performance. Montgomery posted a .386 batting average during the season, and hit .375 in the state tourney. In the state contest, Montgomery went to the plate eight times, connected for three hits, including a double. He scored two runs and had a .500 on-base percentage. During the regular season, the junior outfielder belted 27 hits, a team and school record, scored 24 runs and drove in another 23. His on-base percentage was .542. Montgomery also had nine extra base hits, eight doubles and a home run. This ties a school record and led the team. Fulks, a senior outfielder, led the team at the plate with a .419 average. He had 26 hits, scored 27 runs to lead the team and break the school record. Fulks had 22 RBIs on the year and led the team with an on-base percentage of .646. Rockett spent his senior season behind the plate for the Wolves. He boasts a .305 batting average, with 18 hits, 20 runs and 16 RBIs. His on-base percentage was .513. Yates played short and pitched during his senior year. His batting average was .354, including 23 hits, 21 runs and 21 RBIs. Yates led the team with three round trippers, which tied a school record. His on-base percentage was .582. In addition, Yates led the team and set a new school record with his 9-3 mark on the hill. He recorded 65 strikeouts in 57 2/3 innings and walked a scant 25.
