Classy Moments from GMS

Published Wednesday, May 29, 1996 in the Gurdon Times

For many of you readers, you are aware of the fact that school is out for the summer months. The Gurdon Middle School had several adjustments to make this year. We started out the year in the only middle School we had known, the one referred to as "The Old Middle School" now. The teachers had been prepared to move to the present building during the summer before we started to school. As you know, the move did not take place as expected, so therefore, so we started to school with packed boxes in our rooms. We kept believing that we would be moving soon.

The students were in for a shock, as there were no lockers for their books. Each homeroom teacher had boxes for the students to use for "storage" for their things. It seemed as though there were boxes all over the place!

After Christmas, we finally made the big move to our present Middle School Building. It was an adventure of unforgettable memories! Several students helped us make the move, of whom we appreciated so much. Teachers unpacked and begin to prepare their new rooms to meet individual needs. During those long days of hard work the staff expressed sincere willingness to help each other, such as sharing items that they could not use but someone else could. Thinking back, it was a time that "Teamwork" prevailed.

The students were so grateful to have lockers and they begin to stuff them full of books, papers, clothes, and, well I'll just say other items. The 5th and 6th graders were really "big guys" with lockers, as it had been 7th grade students were assigned a locker.

We have an auditorium! No longer do we have to have assemblies in the gym. We have really enjoyed the convenience of the auditorium. No longer do our students have to go outside to go to the cafeteria, and that may be the reason that the breakfast number increased.

We found the intercom to be most helpful for all of us, as announcements could be made quicker, and it had to save Mrs. Gattis countless steps. Speaking of Mrs. Gattis, she found the larger office and counter area so much more convenient, and we were excited for her. She takes such pride in the appearance of the office, as it is for many visitors, the only part of the school they really see. Thanks for "caring" Mrs. Cattis.

The COE committees have been busy working on the five year plan, and several improvements are very evident, with more to come later.

The awards assembly recognized many of our students for their good behavior, perfect attendance, and academic achievements. Students of the year were 5th grade, Claya Calley, 6th grade, Lyndi Escalante, 7th grade, Josh Swinea, and 8th grade, Heather Davies. The Presidential Educational Awards for outstanding Educational improvement were awarded to: John David Coston, Chady Calley, and Justin Gonzales. The Presidential Awards for Educational Excellence were awarded to: Bryan Anderson, Heather Davies, Martin Downey, Brandi Escalante, Brandon Gattis, Whitney Hogue, Andrew Wislon, and Cassie Lynn.

We have had a busy year. We look forward to the challenge that the school year 1996-1997 will present to use. We hope that you will take time to call the Gurdon Times and express to them your desire for our column to be continued next year and let them know how much you enjoyed this year's.

As this is the last article for the year, we sincerely appreciate your support, your concern, and your willingness to help when the need is present. We strive to make our school one that will represnt Gurdon with Pride and Honor. Classy Moments at GMS are very important.
