Plenty Going On At Gurdon's Cabe Library During The Summer

Published Wednesday, June 5, 1996 in the Gurdon Times

There are some exciting things happening in Gurdon this summer.

Th at Cabe Library.

The library is planning a wild summer for kids with the Neighborhood Evnironmental Science Activities (NESA) programs. NESA gets under way Wednesday, June 19, at 3:00 p.m.

It will continue through July 24 for children grades one through six.

This six-week series of science classes from the Arkansas Museum of Science and History in Little Rock is a unique offering incorportating live animals, museum speciments, games and innovative teaching.

Museum instructors will visit Wednesday afternoons at 3:00 each for a one hour presentation that's more like fun than education.

NESA classes are an opportunity for children to learn about the natural world and some of the plants and animals that inhibit it. Students and the instructors will investigate the intricate of relationships between themselves and the rest of the world.

This summer's NESA programs include:

DESERT ENDURANCE: Desolate. Barren. Is that what you think about deserts? Almost waterless, not lifeless, deserts conceal a profusion of creatures, which make their living in a parched land. Learn about water consevation from the pros.

CRITTER CONSTRUCTION: Without plans, or hands, animals are master engineers. For solitary hermits or men societies, animals' abodes are second to none. Test your skills against some native builders.

FLYING HIGH: It's a bird! It's a bug! It's a bat! Taking to the air comes naturally for all kinds of creatures. Humans may be earthbound, but kids on Wednesday afternoons will explore the secrets of lofty locomotion.

IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD: People, petunias, dogs and gnats are just the beginning. Join the safari to ordinary places and discover the startling menagerie around the corner, down the raod and right under your nose.

GRABBING A BITE: From slurping suckers to wrap around stomachs, the library has a feast of tidbits about feeding. The menu includes all sorts of consumers: gulpers, strainers, chompers and chewers. Don't bother with a knife and fork.

WARM UPS: It's hard to believe during an Arkansas summer, but keeping warm can be very demanding. You can help investigate what animals are up to when the temperatures are down.
