College NewsPublished Wednesday, June 12, 1996 in the Nevada County PicayuneThe United States Achievement Academy (USAA) has announced that Katie Lynn Gordon has been named an All-American Collegiate scholar. The USAA has established the All-American Collegiate Award Program to offer deserved recognition to superior students who excel in the academic disciplines. The students must earn a 3.3 or higher grade point average. The academy selects All-American Collegiate Scholars upon the exclusive recommendation by teachers, coaches, counselors and other qualified sponsors. "Recopgnizing and supporting our youth is more important than ever before in America's history," Dr. George Stevens, executive director of the USAA, said. "Certainly, winners of the All-American Collegiate awards should be congratulated and appreciated for their dedication to excellence and achievement." Gordon attended Southern Arkansas University this year where she was active in the Student Government Association as a freshman senator, Phi Beta Lambda, Residence Hall Association, vice-president of Harrod Hall, treasurer of Talbot Hall, Campus Activities Board and Phi Mu. She was named to the dean's list both semesters and was given the honor this spring as being selected as RHA freshman of the year. Gordon is the daughter of Alex and Janet Gordon of Prescott. She is the granddaughter of the late Ralph and Martha Gordon and the late Loyce Hilderbrand and Evelyn Hilderbrand of Prescott. The USAA also announced that Eric Lowe has been named a United States National Award winner in science. The award is a prestigious honor very few high school students can ever hope to attain. In fact, the academy recognizes less than 10 percent of all American high school students. Lowe, who attends Stamps High School, was nominated for this national award by Kaye Minter, a teacher at the school. His name will appear in the United States Achievement Academy Official Yearbook, which is published nationally. The academy selects USAA winners upon the exclusive recommendation of teachers, coaches, counselors and other qualified sponsors and upon the Standards of Selection set forth by the Academy. The criteria for selection are a student's academic peformance, interest and aptitude, leadership qualities, responsibility, enthusiasm, motivation to learn and improve, citizenship, attitude and coooperative spirit, dependability and recommendation from a teacher or director. Lowe is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Terry Lowe. His granddparents are Georgia Weaver of McNeil and Jewell Lowe of Buckner. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
