Otwell Democratic Nominee For Sheriff
Published Wednesday, June 12, 1996 in the Nevada County PicayuneRodgers Wins State Slot; Wingfield Wins Council Position Steve Otwell, the challenger against first term Sheriff Harold Vines, took an early lead Tuesday night in the Run-off Election and won the race, 1,474 to 1,273. Otwell was a former auxiliary deputy under former sheriff Abb Morman and for Vines until early this year.<} Otwell will now face Independent Johnny Campbell in the November General Election. In other races Donna Wingfield defeated Vernon Meeks for Prescott Alderman in Ward Four, Position Two, 541-454. Meeks carried his own ward (Four), 111-75, and led the race until the last box was counted, which was Ward One. Wingfield carried that box 260-130. Sandra Rodgers defeated Steve Buelow in the State Representative's race, 2,318 to 2,105, with her win coming from Hempstead County, where she and her husband, Danny, moved to around two years ago. Rodgers was born and raised in Nevada County, but Buelow carried Nevada County by a 684-664 count. These were the only local races in the Run-Off Primary Tuesday, but a race for the U.S. Senate was also voted on by countians, with Winston Bryant winning over Lu Hardin in the county.
