Sports Events Set For Chicken & Egg Festival

Published Wednesday, July 10, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

Cries of fowl ball will be heard during the annual Chicken and Egg Festival, July 17-20 at the men's softball tourney.

These cries will also be heard at the Chicks With Sticks softball tourney and at the fifth annual Coop Hoop three-on-three basketball tourney.

The men's softball tourney will be for teams in class D and below. The entry fee is $100 per team for the double-elimination event. There will also be a five home run limit, and teams will be required to use red lace MSP 47 softballs.

There will be tee-shirts for every entrant, with team trophies going to the top three teams. An individual trophy will go to the first place winner.

The deadline for entering a team in this contest is July 16. The tourney is limited to the first 16 teams signing up.

Entry fee for the Chicks with Sticks tourney is $85 per team. This, too, is a double-elimination contest, with a three homer limit. The chicks will be using green dot softballs.

Again, all entrants get tee-shirts, with trophies for the top three teams and individual trophies for the champion.

The deadline for entering a team is July 16.

Though the ball stays round, it's much larger and the rules change for the Coop Hoop tourney.

There will be seven youth divisions, along with one category for women 18 and up. Entry fees of $30 per team must be ponied up before teams can take the court. All entrants will receive coop-hoop tee-shirts with the winner taking home a trophy.

Games in the youth and women's divisions will be held July 19. Registration will be at 4:30 p.m., with the first tipoff slated for 5 o'clock.

The entry fee for the men's division will be $60 per team. A cash prize of $300 goes to the top trio, while the runner up goes home with $100.

All teams entering will receive coop-hoop shirts, with the winning teams getting trophies.

Deadline for entering a team in the coop hoop is July 16.

Registration will begin at 7 a.m. July 20, with gametime set for 8 a.m.

The spherical objects will be flying fast and furious during the Something Eggstra Tennis Tournament, scheduled for July 19-20.

This tourney will feature singles, doubles and mixed doubles events, along with youth divisions from 10 and under, to 11-14 and 15-18 years old.

All participants will take home tee-shirts, while the top two in each division will be presented trophies.

The entry fee is $15 for singles events and $25 for doubles. To register, however, contact Joyce Martin at 887- 5182 or the Chamber of Commerce at 887-2101.

Deadline for entering is July 17. Those entering the tourney need to get in touch with Martin the afternoon of July 18 for match times.

Players are required to provide their own tennis balls.

And this won't be all of the athletic events for the festival. At 8 a.m. Saturday, July 20, the annual Chase the Chicken 5K Run will begin, along with the Chick Chasers Kid's Fun Run.

Entry fee for the 5K is $12 in advance and $15 the day of the race. For the chick chasers run, entry fee will be $5. Checks must be made payable to the Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce.

Overall awards will be presented in each division to the top three finishers, with tee-shirts given to the first 125 entering. Everyone will get a tee-shirt, but after the first 125, they will be mailed. All chick chasers will also get medals for running.

Other events include the ring a neck horseshoe pitching tournament, for the more sedate athletes.

However, for those with plenty of grit in their craw, there is the Cock of the Walk weightlifting tournament. This contest is not for chicken at heart, or back.

Fortunately, there is more to the festival than sporting events. In fact, for those who prefer exercising their table muscles, there is the Prescott Men's Ministry's Chicken in the Rough dinner.

Chicken, potatoes, bread and a soft drink are on the menu for $4.50 per person. Dinner will be served from 5-7 p.m. Friday, July 19.

Festival chairperson, Jean Bolton-Jones encourages all to wear their festival shirts the week of the festival, and especially Friday's July 12 and 19.

In addition, the Kiwanis Club will host its annual omelet breakfast at 6:30 a.m. Saturday, July 20 at the park pavilion. Other food concessions will be scattered like corn throughout the festival grounds as well.

And the annual variety show will be held Friday, July 19, from 6:30-9:30 p.m. on the festival stage. There will also be plenty of entertainment throughout the day Saturday as well.

The antique car show will be held Saturday, starting at 9 a.m. in the park as well.

The chicken market opens for business at 5 o'clock Friday, July 19 and runs all day Saturday. This will give the bargain hunters something to do as there will be plenty of novelty, commercial and arts and crafts booths on hand.
