City Pays Overdue $10,000 Tax Bill For Closed FactoryPublished Wednesday, July 17, 1996 in the Nevada County PicayuneNot only is the city of Prescott (and its residents) left with an empty building after the closing of Prescott Manufacturing, but are also repsonsible for paying the pro-perty taxes for more than $10,000. This, according to Mayor Howard Taylor, has been paid with State Land Commissioner Charlie Daniels. The $10,158 late property tax bill was for three years. Taylor reported to council members at the regular meeting of the council Monday at Prescott City Hall. All penalties and fees were waived by Daniels, according to Taylor, because the city was making an attempt to pay the taxes and keep them current. Taylor said taxes on the building and property were waived while there was a bond indebtedness on the books. Once the bond was paid in full, taxes were to be kept up by the corporate firm which owned Prescott Manufacturing. The plant closed earlier this year. It had produced pajamas as the main source of its income, but also made shorts and other leisure wear. During Monday night's meeting, Taylor told council members he and Prescott Police Chief Willie Latin would be looking into an animal control problem and reporting back to the council. He said some action on the city's part might be considered drastic, but many complaints on dogs and cats had come in after an article in last week's Nevada County Picayune. Councilman Danny Beavert told members he had never seen a proposed ordinance before the council controlling animals, though the public protested the consideration of one during a public meeting at the Nevada County Courthouse many years ago. Outside the meeting, Latin told of calls he had received of not only dogs and cats, but also on cattle inside the city limits. In the past action against stray or unknown dogs has caused some outcry. One woman attending a council meeting complained of a pet being killed. Latin said at that time no one know of an owner to the dog and so many complaints had been received against the animal, eradication seemed necessary. Someone unknown notifified the Texarkana Humane Society, which contacted Latin concerning the condition of animals near the Prescott VFW on Wildcat Road as well as cows on a lot on Cale Road. Council members studied the city's audit and items not in compliance. City accountant Carl Dalrymple told the board very little problems exist on the audit. One non-compliance item was handled by the council at the beginning of the meeting concerning retirement drawn by Taylor from his previous position as Clerk/Treasurer. Taylor had been drawing the retirement though approval through a vote was needed by the council. This was approved. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
