Weightlifting Results From Festival Given

This year's weightlifting contest in the Chicken and Egg Festival was the most competitive one ever, according to Ed Tyree, who was in charge of this event.

He said there were 20 athletes bowing up on the benchpress to establish the "pecking order" and earn bragging rights in the ninth annual Cock of the Walk weightlifting tournament. "The large roosters who showed up helped to keep the lifters pumped," he said, "and they saw many impressive efforts."

The winners and runners-up in each division were awarded with a trophy and t-shirt. Third and fourth place finishers also received t-shirts.

The sponsors of this year's event were AJ's Fitness Center and Oliver's One Stop.

Place finishers in each division included are listed below.

Lightweight division: Brent Jordan of Prescott pressed 190 pounds for first place; Nolan Rodgers of Prescott, 150 pounds for second place; Chris Smith of Benton, 140 pounds for third place; and Chic N. Little of Boughton, 55 pounds for fourth place.

Middleweight division: Jack Smith Sr. of Mena, 340 pounds for first place; Quincey Samuels of Prescott, 300 pounds for second place; Robert Poole of Prescott, 290 pounds for third place; Gary Abrams of Shreveport, La., 275 pounds for fourth place; James Butler of Prescott, 250 pounds for fifth place; and Kirk Stone of Murfreesboro, 200 pounds for sixth place.

Light-heavyweight division: Jack Smith Jr. of Mena, 345 pounds for first place; Allen White of Hope, 340 pounds for second place; Tracy Stiger of Texarkana, 335 pounds for third place; Mike Otwell of Emmet, 330 pounds for fourth place; Randy Lowdermilk of Prescott, 300 pounds for fifth place; and Jamie William of Prescott, 245 pounds for sixth place.

Heavywight division: Jason Hartness of Monticello, 405 pounds for first place; Kyron Johnson of Prescott, 350 pounds for second place; Steve Otwell of Emmet, 330 pounds for third place; Kevin McClellan of Prescott, 325 pounds for fourth place; and Tyrone Butler of Prescott, 300 pounds for fifth place.

Open division: Ed Tyree of Prescott, 440 pounds for first place; and Yuri Vonhershanzkey of Russia, no show.
