Winners Announced From Softball Games

Published Wednesday, July 24, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

There was plenty of action when the ladies took to the diamond during the annual Chicks with Sticks tourney at the Chicken and Egg Festival.

And it took a while to complete this year's contest, as the final game to determine the overall champ wasn't begun until 1 a.m. Sunday, July 21, with Sharon Baptist Church of Benton claiming the crown.

Play started with the Unpredictables dumping the Papa Bears in game one. Sharon Baptist then whipped Coleman Park, while the Field Wreckers dropped Hawg Ball into the loser's bracket of the double elimination event.

Haynes posted a win over Hines Trucking, while the Merchants dispatched W.W. Express in their game. M&M Bonding fell victim to the Clever Girls in the final first round game.

The second round opened with Olsten Kimberly taking it on the chin from the Unpredictables. The Field Wreckers walloped Sharon Baptist and the Merchants foreclosed on Haynes. The Clever Girls were outsmarted by the Shiloh Dog Pound.

Round three saw the Unpredictables outlast the Field Wreckers and Shiloh stampede the Merchants.

In the final game of the winner's bracket, the Dog Pound chewed up the Unpredictables.

Meanwhile, in the consolation bracket, WW Express sent Hines packing, while Hawg Ball eliminated Coleman Park in the opening round.

Round two saw Olsten do away with WW Express, while M&M Bonding was demolished by the Field Wreckers. The Papa Bears gobbled Haynes, while Hawg Ball ended the Clever Girls' hopes.

Olsten fell to the Field Wreckers in their game, with the Papa Bears feasting on Hawg Ball.

With the games winding down, and the day growing longer, the Merchants were the next victims of the Field Wreckers, while Sharon Baptist foiled the Papa Bears.

Sharon Baptist then derailed the Field Wreckers, and went on to edge the Unpredictables.

As Saturday turned into Sunday, Sharon Baptist and the Shiloh Dog Pound met for the first time, with Sharon posting a win.

The Benton-based Sharon squad then had to play the Linden, Texas Shiloh team again at 1 a.m., pulling off an astounding win for the title.

In the men's tourney, Borden's of Hope went home with the crown, while Columbia County Ambulance finished second and McDonald's of Hope was third.
