Okolona Pair Go On Marsh ManueversPublished Wednesday, July 31, 1996 in the Gurdon TimesThe week of July 8-12 Leah Lynn, daughter of Henry and Vickie Lynn of Okolona, was chosen to attend Marsh Maneuvers. Only four Arkansas 4-H'ers were allowed in a camp exchange with Louisiana 4-H'ers. Marsh Maneuvers was conducted on Grand Terre Island off the cost of Louisiana. The 4-Her's were required to keep a Field Journal of daily events. Wedlands functions and values in Louisiana were studied. Leah learned how to trawl and was able to go seining. The marine organisms collected were identified and some were served up for supper. The camp took place at the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Marine Lab. The 4-H'ers toured the lab and were taught how to "age" a fish. The ear bone of some fish is used in determining the age. Jack C. Boles, Jr., the Environmental Management Specialist-Ag from Arkansas, attended the camp with the lucky Arkansas 4-H'ers. The participants were: Laura Waltman from Crawford County, Leah Lynn from Clark County, Katie Barrett from Lawrence County and Steve Dooley from Columbia County. Four 4-H'ers from Louisiana will attend an Arkansas 4-H Camp. Anyone interested in joining a 4-H club should contact the local County Extension Office at 246-2281.
