Football Facts

Published Wednesday, August 7, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

Editor's note: This is the ninth of a 12-part series of a column by Prescott High School football coach Eddie Jackson. The articles will deal with information on the upcoming football season as well as a look back at some facts and stats about Curley Wolf football from the last 25 years. These statistics came from the post-season booklet prepared for each player.

COMING EVENTS: Aug. 6-8. Wolves mini-camp. Monday, Aug. 12, August "Daily Doubles." Friday, Aug. 16, Wolves Leadership Retreat. Monday, Aug 19, Class begins.

COACH'S CORNER: After a long week at the West All-Star camp, I am ready to meet the 1996 Wolves. It was certainly a strange and lonely feeling to be on the practice field with a white "P" in the middle of the action. The Wolves are in the orientation process this week and will get down to business next week The Cubs will open practice when classes begin, but they may report between Aug. 14-16 for equipment issue. We will have more information for these young players at a later date.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: Steve Walker, ol/dl, is another Curley Wolf who played a great deal as a junior which means he will be expected to repeat this year. Steve will have a chance to play more defense this year.

Lamar Dixon, wr/db, gained some valuable experience as a junior and will be expected top contribued more this year. He is a good worker and valuable squad member.

'96 SCHEDULE, SCOUT REPORT: In week 7, the Wolves will hit the road again to take on a new 7AA opponent at Fountain Lake. We have played the Cobras twice in junior varsity games and they play sound fundamental football and have some talented players. They have been competing in AA for several years and could very well be a factor in this conference.

WORD OF THE WEEK: Courage the state or quality of mind or spirit that enables one to face danger with confidence and resolution; fortitude; bravery. Will the Wolves play with Courage at the Cobra Den in game 7?

THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: A hero is usually no braver than any other persoin, just braver a little longer. Courage and bravery are not the absence of fear, but simply continuing with dignity despite the fear.
