Two New Instructors HiredPublished Wednesday, August 7, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune"It's hard to believe it's time for school again," said Rick McAffee, superintendent of the Nevada School District. While it may be hard for the teachers and administrators to believe, imagine what the students are thinking as their summer vacation comes to an end. During the district's regular monthly meeting, moved to Friday, Aug. 2, the board hired Noel Brewster as a sixth grade teacher and Jeff Steed to handle driver's education and be the new baseball coach. McAffee said Gloria Johnson has accepted the district's offer to head the junior and senior Lady Bluejays on the basketball court next season. She will also coach the new girls softball team. This vacancy, along with the baseball coaching slot, occurred when Robert Hall tendered his resignation to accept a job in Hot Springs at Lakeside High School. In other business, McAffee said potholes in the parking lot have been dug out and, weather permitting, will patch them with concrete this week. He said wiring has been done to put computers on all teachers' desks for the coming year. Cotton Brothers will be providing bread for the district for the 1996-97 year. In fact, this was the only bid submitted. McAffee said the air conditioning units for the gymnasium are in Texarkana waiting to be shipped over. He said Howell Heating and Air Conditioning of Hope has the contract to install the units. McAffee said if everything goes well, the units will be installed before school starts, and operational in September. There are some important dates for students to remember for the coming year. Physicals for all athletes, cheerleaders and bus drivers will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 12. The first day for teachers to return is Aug. 13. Their day will begin with a breakfast at 8:30 a.m. for the start of in-service. Parents are invited to open house at Nevada from 4-7 p.m. On Aug. 15. Teachers will meet with parents and students, helping the students find their classrooms. The first day of class will be Aug. 19. School will be all day, with lunch served.
