Written Notice Needed

Published Wednesday, August 14, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

FCIC (crop insurance) contracts require that the insured notify the county office within 72 hours, followed by a written notice of loss to be filed within 15 days of discovering any damage or loss to crops. References made to the insured include both Catastrophic Risk Protection (CAT) insured and producers of NAP (Non-Insured Crop Disaster Assistance Program) crops.

The written notice of loss shall be documented on form FCI-6 and both the insured and the FSA employee accepting the report will sign and date the FCI-6. The written notice shall include the location of damage, extent of damage, cause of damage, the producer's intended use of the acreage (eg. plow up, harvest, abandon), and the urgency of an inspection.

If an insured has damage on a unit and will continue to care for and harvest the crop, the above information still needs to be completed. The producer shall then notify the county office when harvest is completed or additional damage occurs.

It is the insured's responsibililty for timely filing a proper notice for both CAT and NAP crop losses for both preliminary partial losses and final losses when all acreage is either harvested, abandoned, or destroyed. An incomplete or late notice of loss may result in the loss of indemnity payments.
