Wolverettes Coach Ready For Basketball SeasonPublished Wednesday, August 21, 1996 in the Nevada County PicayuneWolverette basketball Coach Cecily Butler is looking forward to the 1996-97 campaign on the hardwood. The reasoning is simple. Several members of the 1995- 96 squad participated in basketball camps throughout the summer and have raised their level of play. Laura Culpepper, a senior this year, attended the Harding University basketball camp in Searcy during the week of July 21-25. This was Culpepper's third camp to attend during the summer. Butler said Culpepper brought back another "sack full" of trophies from this camp. She won the camp's one-on-one contest and brought home the defense award as well. This honor was bestowed on Culpepper by a vote of the coaches running the camp. In addition, she was on the camp's championship five- on-five squad. Also during the course of the camp, three players were selected for hustle awards, and Culpepper was tabbed for one of these as well. According to Butler, five members of the Wolverette team participated in the Arkansas Activity Association (AAA) High School All Star Contest at the University of Central Arkansas. Leslie Hines took part in the three- point shootout, while Stacy Stockton battled in the free throw contest. Culpepper and Stockton were in the one-on-one contest, with Culpepper reaching the quarter finals. Gladies Gulley, Jessica Hildebrand, Stockton and Culpepper were the obstacle course team from Prescott. Last season, the Wolverettes weren't given much of a chance for post- season play. However, they reached the first round of the state tournament before being sent home. This year, the sky's the limit for the Wolverettes as they prepare to defend their 7AA title and look for another trip to the state tourney in March.
