Football FactsPublished Wednesday, August 21, 1996 in the Nevada County PicayuneEditor's note: This is the 11th of a 12-part series of a column by Prescott High School football coach Eddie Jackson. The articles will deal with information on the upcoming football season as well as a look back at some facts and stats about Curley Wolf football from the last 25 years. These statistics came from the post-season booklet prepared for each player. COMING EVENTS: Wednesday, Aug. 22: 7AA conference meeting; Friday, Aug. 23: maroon-white scrimmage; Saturday, Aug. 24: Wolves youth camp, day one; Tuesday, Aug. 27: Cubs maroon/white and Wolves third down scrimmage; Friday, Aug. 30: Wolves at Lakeside; and Saturday, Aug. 31: Wolves youth camp, day two. COACH'S CORNER: Last week we bragged a little too early about our prospective squad size. After a little work and the pads went on, we dropped four in a hurry. By the time we travel to Ashdown, our squad will probably number about 42 to 44 men. In addition to the work demands from high school football, we are now having to contend with students wanting to `specialize,' something that has not been a problem at Prescott since the mid-1980's. SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: Shane Pipken, TB/DB, is rejoining the wolves after going AWOL his junior year. He showed potential as a sophomore and has regained that form as a running back and defenseive cover guy. He is also battling for the punting job. '96 SCHEDULE, SCOUT REPORT: The Wolves will get back to 7AA action in week nine as they host the Fouke Panthers. Another new opppenent, but a familar head coach will visit our stadium on November 1. Coach James Wright worked with the Curley Wolves several years ago and is now leading the Fouke squad into 7AA play. WORD OF THE WEEK: Leader -- A person who shows the way, by going before or along with, one in command of others, either appointed or innately. THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: Lead by example. Let your actions speak for you. Let your work ethic, dedication and commitment inspire your teammates. Who will lead the Wolves thorugh 7AA? SUPPORT STAFF: Two key groups of school personnel who must support any high school football program is the administration and faculty. Don Johnston, superintendent, Tommy Morrison, high school principal, and Jim Gober, middle school principal, all provide leadership for our football teams. Our faculty is very active at pep rallies and this support is appreciated by the Curley Wolf players. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
