McKinnon Girls Fare Well At

Simmental Summer Classic {Katie McKinnon of Gurdon has placed among the leaders at the American Simmental Association's (ASA) Annual Summer Classic, held recently at Fort Worth, Texas.<} {In competition with 286 American Junior Simmental Association (AJSA) members representing 28 states, Miss McKinnon ranked fourth in the overall senior division standings.<} {She won first place in the public speaking contest, finished fifth in the sales talk competition and was a member of the four-member Arkansas team which took five in the team competition.<} {The week-long program included a wide range of cattle-related events and activities. Competition is designed to enhance the learning experience of the contestants through hands-on application, friendly competition and public recognition.<} {Points are gained by competing in judging, showmanship, heifer competition (both Simmental and Simbrah), sales talk, public speaking, sire summary quiz and herdsman quiz.<} {Non-scoring competition is also conducted in interviewing, advertising and promoting and beef bowl.<} {Members of the Texas Simmental-Simbrah Association and the Texas Junior Simmental-Simbrah Association worked hand-in-hand with ASA staff to plan, coordinate and conduct the association's youth programs.<} {#"Texas Simmental breeders did an unbelievable job of hosting the 1996 classic," ASA board chairman Robert Haralson of Atkins said. #"They showed up in large numbers ready and willing to do whatever was needed. We owe them our heartfelt thanks for the job well done."<} {ASA's 1997 combined summer conference-AJSA Classic XVI will be held next July in Spokane, Wash.<}
