Wolverettes Attend Outlaw Camp

Published Wednesday, August 28, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

Prescott's Wolverettes did themselves proud in the Dierks Lady Outlaw Basketball Camp. Coach Cecily Butler carried 18 young players to the camp with her, Aug. 5-9. Victory was the norm for the Prescott crew. The Wolverettes were split into two teams because of their numbers. The "A" team suffered its first, and only, loss against Lake Hamilton in the opening contest. From there, the squad went on a rampage, thumping the "A" teams from Dierks, Kirby, Oden, Umpire, along with the Lady Outlaw's "B" team. The Wolverette "B" team did equally well, whipping Murfreesboro in the opening game, before taking it on the chin from the Dierks, Lake Hamilton and Kirby "B" girls. Later in the week, the Prescott "B" squad redeemed itself by thumping Lockesburg in the final seconds with Kacy Ammons dropping in a layup for the win. They also spanked Murfreesboro a second time in the final game of the tourney. "The girls were very competitive throughout the week," Butler said. "Several have been going to camps all summer, as well as playing AAU ball, and that was very evident in those players. "Although our season is still three months away," she continued, "the girls are very anxious to get started and pick up where they left off last year. "We are led by a great group of seniors, who put their heart on the floor every game and following them are some of the hardest working juniors and sophomores anywhere. "With the work ethic these girls have, along with their ability and talent, good things should come naturally to this year's Wolverette team. I'm very excited about the year ahead," Butler concluded. Those attending the camp were: seniors -- Laura Culpepper, Gladies Gulley, Christy Martin, Kacy Ammons, Amber Arney, Lakisha Stuckey and Lesley Hines; juniors -- Jessica Hildebrand, Jesna Cornelius, DeShawn Fellows, Mandy Cox and Mandy Webb; sophomores -- Stacy Stockton, Melissa Beavert, Jessica Hendrix, Vanessa Brzeski and Cindy Greenwood; and freshmen -- Traci Graham.
