Little League All Stars Win DistrictBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, July 21, 1999 in the Nevada County Picayune History was made Sunday, July 18, when the Prescott 11-12 year old All Stars won the District Tournament. After falling to Fordyce 7-3 Saturday in the double elimination tournament at the James A. Johnson Sports Complex, the Prescott All Stars rallied Sunday afternoon to post a 14-7 thrashing of the visitors and capture the title for the first time ever. Now, the team will advance to the state tournament, playing its first game Saturday at 8 p.m. at Benton. This was also a first for the team to whip Fordyce in little league tourney history. The Prescott crew opened with a pair in the top of the first, being the visiting team as a result of a coin toss. Roger Muldrow got things started with a single, moving to second when Ryan Roberson walked. A double by Cody Brown brought both in. Fordyce tied the game in the bottom of the frame, as Spears reached on an error and scored on a second error allowing Freer to reach safely. Freer scored on a McCollum triple. Inning two was a big one for the Prescott team as six runs scored. Myles Turner led off by reaching on an error. He scored when Aaron Bullock singled. Levi Fitch reached on an error, with Bullock going home after a wild pitch. Phil Hull made it to first on a fielder's choice, but Fitch was gunned down at third. Muldrow singled to put runners at first and second. Roberson walked to load the bases with Brown going downtown for a grand slam to put his team up 8-2. Fordyce was silent in the bottom of the second. Three went to bat and all three went back to the dugout empty handed. Prescott's team added a pair in the top of the third, starting with Bullock walking. Hull also walked and both scored when Roberson doubled. More silence was heard from the Fordyce camp in the bottom of the inning as the side was retired in order. For the first time in the game, the Prescott team was held scoreless in the top of the fourth, though two reached base. Fordyce managed to score in the bottom of the frame, the run being unearned as McCollum scored on an error after reaching on an error. Prescott put the finishing touch on Fordyce in the top of the fifth with six more runs. Bullock doubled, scoring when Billy Jack Daniels singled. Matt Haynie walked to put runners at first and second, but Daniels was nailed trying to steal third. Muldrow singled in Haynie, with Hargraves getting a free pass with two down. Brown doubled, bringing Muldrow and Hargraves home. Hodges walked, as did Justin Barlow. With the bases loaded, Brown attempted to score on a wild pitch, but was caught at home. Fordyce managed to send three runners around the base paths, starting with back-to-back singles by Addison and Spears. Freer reached on an error with Addison scoring. Another error to Brandon brought in Spears and Freer. Bullock walked to open the sixth, but was left stranded as the next three batters were retired. A triple by Clary and ground out allowing Clary to score was the end of Fordyce's hopes in the contest as the Prescott defense stiffened in the bottom of the sixth. Prescott scored 14 runs on 12 hits and nine walks, while five members of the team went down on strikes. Muldrow was the winning pitcher for Prescott, going the distance, giving up four hits, no walks and fanning three. He showed good control as 11 balls were hit on the ground. There will be eight teams in the double-elimination state tilt at Benton. Prescott opens with Corning at 8 p.m. Saturday. To get to the field, take the first exit past the Benton airport, go past a church, turn right and follow the road to the field. The players, coaches and parents will attend a banquet Friday, July 23, which will be followed by a home run derby and bubble blowing contest. The winners will get new baseball bats.
