Published Wednesday, September 4, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

The Great Arkansas Clean Up is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 7.

On this day, the City of Prescott will be cleaning up its streets, yards and vacant lots, according to Mayor Howard Taylor. "I urge all civic clubs, garden clubs, boy and girl scouts and church groups to be involved in this event," he said.

"On behalf of the community, I am asking all to join hands and reduce litter in our neighborhoods. As result of this clean up we can increase out community's pride and be pleased with an improved image. Also, these improvements can potentially boost out city's economy by making it a better place to live and work."

Taylor said Prescott will be visited by a group from the Arkansas Industrial Development Commission (AIDC) for the purpose of determining whether or not the city meets the criteria to be an Arkansas Community of Excellence (ACE).

When the visit occurs, the city's lawns, trees, streets and buildings will be observed for beauty and neatness, he said. "This event is important for our community," he continued, "and we now must begin to prepare for the visit.

"Please take pride in your surroundings and let's all work together to make this event successful."

The City of Prescott sanitation employees and trucks will be working Saturday to help residents get rid of their garbage.

Additionally, Taylor said an effort will be made to clean up all abandoned vehicles in people's yards.

Should the property owners be uncooperative, he said, the city will send them a registered letter giving them a deadline to rid their land of the vehicles.

If this deadline is not met, he said, the city will clean up the property and bill the owner accordingly.
