August Rainfall UpPublished Wednesday, September 4, 1996 in the Nevada County PicayuneAugust in Nevada County was wet. So much so as to have a surplus at the end of the month of 1.33 inches. According to local meteorologist John Teeter, the normal amount of rainfall for August is 3.65 inches. However, at the end of last month, the rain gauge measured 4.98 inches. However, Teeter said, the region is still below normal for the year. Usually, this part of Nevada County has received 36.12 inches of rain during the first eight months of the year. This year, though, 32.28 inches has fallen, leaving the region short by 3.74 inches. Davis Benton, who watches the weather in Cale, said his neck of the woods got 5.38 inches of rain, bringing the summer's total to 22.84 inches. From June through August in 1995, Cale received a scant 6.5 inches of moisture. Teeter said Prescott recorded above normal rainfall for July and August. As of July 1, the area was 10.46 inches below normal. However, July and August were so wet, the region picked up slightly more than six inches. He said rain fell nine days during August, with the largest single amount recorded at 1.30 inches on Aug. 26. The average temperature during the month was 78.5 degrees, 2.7 degrees below normal. The normal August temperature readings are 81.2 degrees. In addition, Teeter said there were two watches or warnings during the month. A heavy thunderstorm from the south-southeast on Aug. 26, produced heavy rain and some wind damage. Teeter said his hand-held wind gauge recorded winds as high as 45 miles per hour at 5:10 p.m. that day. The winds were so severe trees were blown down south of Prescott. The hottest day during August was 92 degrees, on the 5th, 6th, 8th and 19th. The coolest reading was 65 degrees on Aug. 14-16. While it was not a record low high temperature, the 79 degrees recorded Aug. 27 was quite unusual for the month, he said. Looking at September, Teeter said the normal amount of rainfall is 4.29 inches, while the mean temperature should be 74.9 degrees. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
