Cancer Society Meets; Plans Future Activities

Local activities for the Nevada County Chapter of the American Cancer Society (ACS) were planned Thursday at the regular meeting held at First United Methodist Church.

Phyllis Stewart presided with 17 members and area representative Karen Krenzlok present.

Pam Teague will coordinate public awareness for Breast Cancer Month in October.

She reported that 90 percent of Nevada County students have been reached to show danger of smoking at early ages and fliers were given to over 700 people.

A video is available through her office on breast examination and she is available for club programs.

Joan Barton reported 21 contacts for cancer patients served with grooming aids. Scootie Delamar made one Reach to Recovery visit.

The annual golf tournament netted $4,372 for cancer research and care, Lanora Dalrymple said. Memorials have totaled $560, according to Anice Ward, memorial chairman.

October 10, ACS will host the Chamber of Commerce coffee at Central Baptist Church from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Volunteers will serve refreshments using recipes for the ACS cookbook Sampling Arkansas.

Plans were also made for the national Great American Smokeout on November 21 with a detailed program to be announced later.

The board approved certification requirements of state ACS.

The next meeting will be held November 14.
