Letter To EditorPublished Wednesday, July 21, 1999 in the Gurdon TimesTo the editor: I think our letter in the July 7th Gurdon Times was misunderstood by some people. It was not intended to put down the Mayor in any way, or to persuade anybody on the outcome of the annexation issue. As a matter of fact, I personally heard the tape recording of the June 21st council meeting when Mayor Rick Smith said that Beirne has a class 9 rating, plus he praised the Beirne firemen and especially Chief Doug Brumley for all the hard work that we have done. What was in the paper was just a misprint on the paper's part. Just an honest mistake. As far as the annexation issue goes, I might as well state my opinion. I don't understand what the problem is. We need the school to be inside the city limits in order to get police protection from our nearest police force, which is Gurdon. Police protection at football games and at school is a necessity, period. Whatever has to be done for the kids' safety just has to be done. Let's make sure our kids have a fair chance.
