Published Wednesday, September 11, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital has annonced plans for the Emmet Wheels for Life Bike-A-Thon to be held on October 12.

Coordinator for this year's event is Anita Allen, who encourages all residents and businesses to support this community effort.

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, founded in 1962 in Memphis, Tenn., by the late entertainer Danny Thomas, is the largest childhood cancer research center in America in terms of the number of patients treated and treatment success.

Treatment is provided at no cost to the family and all findings are shared freely with doctors and hospitals all over the world.

Thanks to St. Jude Hospital, children who have leukemia, pediatric AIDS, sickle-cell anemia, and other life-threatening diseases now have a better chance to live.

Ten-year-old Jason Ferguson of Richmond, Va., represents all the patients who have received the benefits of St. Jude's research. Jason was diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer in February 1994. He underwent surgery and a series of chemotherapy treatments and is now cancer free. Jason feels well and loves to ride his bike.

The annual Emmet Wheels For Life will begin at 9:00 a.m. in Emmet. There will also be a walk-a-thon and a horse-a-thon, all starting at 9 a.m.

All events are open to all ages.

These events will be followed by a children's gospel jamboree at 2:00 p.m.
