Curley Wolves Rip Through Bobcats, 25-16 (cont)Published Wednesday, September 18, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayunegoing over from the two on the first play of the last period. Flemons kicked the extra point to make it 25-0 with 11:57 left in the game. Conway, mixing his plays with running and passing attacks, managed Hope's first TD in 11 plays. Conway then converted for two points making it 25-8. Trying to get the ball back, the Bobcats attempted an onsides kick, but Vanhook gathered it in and ran it down to the Hope 12, giving Presoctt another scoring opportunity. The opportunity was stopped, however, when a pitchback bounced around on the ground. Prescott recovered the ball, but lost 13 yards on the play. They eventually attempted a field goals, but a bad snap stopped the Prescott play. The Bobcats took over on their own 19-yard line this time, and once more moved the ball well on the ground and through the air to get their second TD. Conway converted another two-point try to make the score 25-16. Vanhook recovered the next onsides kick at the Prescott 47. From that point, a delay of game was called against the Wolves, and Johnston went to the ground after each snap to run out the clock with Prescott winning the game. Vanhook, including his 38-yard return on the onsides kick, rushed for for a total of 77 yards. However, he only netted 39 offensively. Marlow rushed for 54 yards on 12 plays. Stafford rushed six times for 35 yards for the Wolves. Prescott attempted 17 passes during the game, completing four for 98 yards. The accumulated 161 more on the ground for a total of 259 yards. Hope finished with a total of 215 yards, most of them coming in the fourth quarter. Conway attempted 23 passes, completing 10 for 126 yards. The Curley Wolves were penalized three times for 15 yards. Hope was penalized six times for 60 yards. Prescott still has a long way to go, offensively and defensively. One of the main reasons Hope was able to score was the shuffling of players in and out of the game by the coaches. Improvement, however, must be made before next week's conference opener against the Lions at Bismarck. There is only one more game to `practice,' but the Wolves can be prepared. It's a matter of learning from the mistakes and correcting them. Then, of course, it's also determination. The Wolves must be ready next week, determined to win the conference again, one game at a time. First things first. This week's game against Gurdon will be in the PHS stadium. The Prescott marching band continues to improve each week. By the time the `real' season gets here they should have most of their numbers down pat.
