No Carnival Expected at This Year's FairBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, September 18, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune While a new Miss America was crowned Saturday night, the new Nevada County Fair Queen has yet to be selected. Those who have entered the pageants are waiting with bated breath as they vie for the crown and a chance to become the Miss SWAR Rodeo Queen. The deadline for entering the pageants has long since passed, and it's almost time for the girls to hit the runway. This year, the pageants have been scheduled for two different days. Thursday, Sept. 19, will be when the Little Miss Nevada County Fair Queen is selected. The Junior Miss and Fair Queens will be chosen Saturday night, following the annual talent show. While the talent show, pageants and livestock shows, along with the arts, crafts and horticulture events, there may not be a midway and carnival this year. Tim Clarke, county agent, said the owner of the carnival booked has been arrested and is currently in jail. Clarke has been scrambling, making phone calls to other carnival owners, but it doesn't look good. This is the second time in three years the Nevada County Fair has had problems with the carnival booked. Clarke said the fair association may look at alternative methods next year. Other than the carnival, though, everything else is in place and ready to go. Friday night, he said, will bring back the horse show for the second year. This, according to Clarke, is becoming a very popular event. So, aside from the problems with Southern Fun Carnivals, the 60th Annual Nevada County Fair should provide patrons with plenty of good, clean fun.
