September 30 Is Deadline For Multi-Peril Crop Insurance

Published Wednesday, September 18, 1996 in the Gurdon Times

September 30 is the final date for a producer to obtain multi- peril crop insurance for 1997 wheat, oats, rye and barley crops.

Many proudcers may be unaware of the September 30 deadline, since their efforts and resources are presently centered on 1996 spring seeded crops. Federal Crop Insurance established the September 30 deadline many years ago, and an extension of this date is not expected.

Crop insurance is no longer required, but a waiver must be on file. Producers are encouraged to maintain their crop insurance in case of a loss or disaster on insurable crops.

Since catastrophic (CAT) policies are continuous unless successfully cancelled by the company or the producer, you should review your copy of the 1996 crop insurance contract to make sure all crops you intend to produce in 1997 are listed.

If all are listed, you have met the September deadline.

If a fall seeded crop is missing, you must report to your insurance provider by September 30 to add the missing crop to the policy.

Your Farm Service Agency (FSA) staff will be happy to help you with this verification, but your farming plans and needs from year to year are not known by FSA.

If you wish to cancel your wheat, oats, barley or rye CAT policy that was effective for 1996, you must file a written request by September 30.

For further information contact the FSA office at 1030 Village Dr. in Arkadelphia, or call 246-9816. Office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
