Rural Water Project Ready for BiddingBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, September 18, 1996 in the Gurdon Times Finally, bids will be let for the Gurdon Rural Water project. Harold Hurst, manager of the Gurdon Water and Sewer Department, told the water commission Monday night enough easements have been procured to get the next step underway. He said Charles Summerford, project engineer, told him they were close enough to go to bid. However, Gurdon city attorney Eric Hughes must first certify the 237 easements before bids are let. "I don't know how long this will take," Hurst said. "I hope to get it done this month." If all goes well, he said, the bids will be advertised for 30 days, with the engineers getting another 30 days to examine the project specifications. Then, the contractor will need 30 days to look everything over as well. Therefore, it looks like it will be the first part of 1997 before work begins on the project, Hurst said. In other business, Hurst said water samples have been taken from the airport area well, but the results aren't back as yet. He informed the panel two temporary employees have been hired to fill the vacancies left when two other workers took other jobs. Both were hired with the understanding the jobs could either be temporary positions or work into full-time jobs. The computers, which had been damaged by lightning earlier this summer, are operational again. However, Hurst said the department still needs to be billed stating the damage was caused by lightning so the city's insurance will pay for it.
