A quick glance at the calendar below will show an increase of events during the month of October.

I want to call your attention to the career day/night programs at Hope and Nevada High Schools. Because we have no facilities for a program at PHS this year, both schools have been gracious in inviting us to theirs.

On October 9, we will bus all of our seniors to Nevada High School for the career day. I am sure interested parents would be welcome to attend that program; however, since it is during the day, the program at Hope High School the night of October 8 would probably be more convenient for working parents. Hope has extended a special invitation to all.

I need to clarify the Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship application deadline listed for October 1.

There seems to be a bit of confusion. That deadline is only for the seniors who graduated last year. Our current seniors will not be able to apply until the year of their graduation which will be during the coming spring term.

High-ranking sophomores and juniors will want to take note of the National Merit Test which will be given at PHS on October 15.

Scholarship opportunities are available if a junior scores high enough, while interested sophomores may take it in preparation for their junior year.

The score to land a junior in the semi- finalist standing is high and we do not always have such. We had one in last year's class, Michael Loe. As a semi- finalist, Michael will take Scholastic Aptitude Test, and his score on that will determine whether or not he becomes a 'finalist.'

Juniors and sophomores must register and pay an $8.50 fee to take the Merit Test. To register, a student should bring a check made payable to PHS to my office, sign a sheet, and pick up a registration booklet. The deadline to register is October 10. The test will be given in the media center the morning of October 15. This is a national test date and we are registered to give it only on that date.

We end our first quarter on October 18, and parent-teacher conferences are coming up on October 24. That presents a new problem for us. We no longer have a lobby area for the conferences. We will probably have to work out of the media center and individual classrooms, but we'll decide about that later.

One final item of interest concerns one of our faculty. Micki Johnston has completed a leadership seminar held by Kappa State of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. The seminar was an intensive study for personal and professional growth designed for outstanding women educators. Arkansas State University hosted the seminar and provided instructors from their faculty. Sessions included: Learning Styles, The Internet, Video Networking, Education Consortiums, and Wellness Paradigms. I just had to ask Micki about that session on Wellness Paradigms. Four days of seminar, and she couldn't explain it -- couldn't even find it in the dictionary. Oh well, sometimes higher education is over all our heads.
