BatteryPublished Wednesday, September 25, 1996 in the Nevada County PicayuneA 31-year-old Bluff City man has been charged with battery in the first degree, while his victim lies in critical condition in University Hospital in Little Rock. According to reports from the NCSO, Tony Purifoy beat Searcy Calanahan Jr., also of Bluff City, with a claw hammer at the height of a disturbance. The two were at the home of Connie Mixon when the victim allegedly began verbally abusing Purifoy and pushing him around. Purifoy told officers he tried to walk away, but Calanahan kept shoving him. However, Purifoy reportedly picked up the claw hammer and struck Calanahan in the head several times with the claw portion. Calanahan was taken to Medical Park Hospital in Hope, but later flown to University, where he was last listed in critical condition with a blood clot on the brain. Purifoy is being held in the Nevada County Jail under a $50,000 bond. Authorities say alcohol may have played a part in the incident, which occurred Friday, Sept. 13.
