Horace H. McKenziePublished Wednesday, September 25, 1996 in the Nevada County PicayuneHorace H. McKenzie, 91, of Prescott died at his home on Saturday, September 21, 1996. Mr.McKenzie was a lifelong resident of Nevada County except for four years spent in El Dorado during the oil boom serving as chief deputy circuit clerk. He was born March 6, 1905, to the marraige of H.B. McKenzie and Fannie P. McKenzie. He graduated from Prescott High School at the age of 15 and attended Henderson-Brown College. After his father's death, he began managing McKenzie Abstract and Realty Company and studying law. March 6, 1933, he was licensed as an attorney at law. November 23, 1940, he maried Lawrence Britt. They were married for 50 years until Mrs. McKenzie's death on Novmeber 30, 1990. In 1934, McKenzie was the primary organizer of Prescott Federal Savings and Loan Association. He was chairman of the board of directors for 40 years. He served on the board of directors of Ozan Lumber Company prior to its acquisition by Potlatch Corporation. He was a member of the board of directors of Logan Grocer Company. The law office of Mr. McKenzie was always in Prescott. His original office was a solo practice. In 1949, the law firm of Tompkins, McKenzie and McRae was formeed with W.V. Tompkins, Charles H. Tompkins and Duncan McRae. The law firm has continued and is now McKenzie, McRae, Vasser & Barber. He was a member of the Arkansas and American Bar Associations; Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers; and a Fellow of the International Society of Barristers. He served from 1965 to 1968 on the State Board of Law Examiners and for several years on the Arkansas State Revision Commission. He was appointed in 1973 as a special justice of the Arkansas Supreme Court. Mr. McKenzie was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church, where he was always active. He served as chairman of the administrative board. Survivors inlcude one son, Jim McKenzie, his daughter-in-law, Betty McKenzie of Prescott; his granddaughters, Kris Raub of McKinney, Texas, and Miki Morrow of Little Rock; his sister, Jeanette McCormack of Little Rock; and his great granddaughter, McKenzie Raub of Little Rock. Services were held Monday, September 23, at the First United Methodist Church in Prescott with Rev. Dale Diffee officiating.
