Three Still Unbeaten

Published Wednesday, September 25, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

Three teams remain unbeaten in the 7AA Conference.

Prescott, Nashville and Fouke all post 3-0 records. Fountain Lake and Bismarck fell last week and now have 2-1 records. Fordyce is 1-2 and De Queen is 0-3.

Prescott's 14-0 victory over Gurdon last Friday night could have been much worse if the game had been played. It was called with 1:35 left in the first quarter.

There were a lot of games played Friday night in spite of stormy weather, but not at Prescott or Hope.

First the officials at Prescott called for a 20-minute delay, then the Gurdon coaching staff decided they had enough.

At the same time Nashville led the Bobcats at Hope, 14-0, and that game was postponed until Saturday night. The Scrappers finished Saturday what they had started Friday. They won 44-14.

In the meantime, Fouke was taking care of Foreman, 21-0. No one knows for sure what the Panthers have, but whatever it is it worked against the Gators, a former opponent of Prescott.

On the 10:00 news the film clips showed many games being played in driving rain with thunder and lightning all around. There were some delays, some up to an hour, but the games were played. Not so at Prescott and Hope.

Perhaps coaches at Hope thought they had Hope by playing Saturday against the powerful Scrappers. But buying time didn't help any. Nashville's passing game is still alive and well.

Prescott has been tried this year by two Class AAA teams, Ashdown and Hope, and each time the Curley Wolves succeeding in outlasting their opponents.

Now that the real season -- the conference games -- is here, outlasting the oppoenent is too big a chance.

It has come down to heads-up playing by the best team (according to everyone in Prescott) in Arkansas. Smart, good execution of plays is a must. Mistakes are out. Moving the ball through the air as well as on the ground is in. No more interceptions and no more fumbles. It's time for real football now.

And the Curley Wolves can do it. This year's players are smart and have football know-how. It's just a matter now of putting what they know into practice. It must begin Friday night at Bismarck. It must not stop until the championship is won this year.

While Fouke (Prescott's opponent November 1) was winning and while Hope (Prescott's opponent last week) was losing to what the Democrat calls the number one team in Class AA (Nashville will host Prescott next week), here is what other teams that Prescott faces this season were doing.

* Ashdown whipped Star City, 33-7.

* Bismarck lost to Horatio, 24-8.

* De Queen (here on October 11) took another loss, this time to Murfreesboro, 23-15.

* Fountain Lake (host to Prescott October 18) dropped its first game, 23-6, to Hot Springs Lakeside, the first win for the Rams.

* Junction City (host to Prescott October 25) was shut out, 28-0, by Rison.

* Fordyce (here Thursday, November 7) lost, 13-6, to Lonoke.

Bismarck is coming off a good season. In fact they've had several good season in the past few years.

This year the Lions have moved up from Class A to play with what Prescott coach Eddie Jackson calls the toughest conference in the state. Most other coaches in the 7AA Conference agree with him.

Just because Bismarch is new to Class AA doesn't mean that Prescott should take them lightly. To make it a successful season, the Wolves must face each opponent as if the game stands between them and another championship. It does.
