Scholarship Available With EssayPublished Wednesday, September 25, 1996 in the Nevada County PicayuneJunior high and high school students may win up to $200 cash, a college scholarshipo, or a study trip to Moscow, Russia, by entering the Walz History Essay contest at Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia. The contest, sponsored by the department of history, political science and geography at SAU, is open through March 10. The essay contest is open to students in grades seven through 12. Ten cash prizes ranging from $50 to $200 will be awarded. The grand prize is a four-year scholarship to attend SAU. The grand prize winner may choose either the full scholarship or a partial scholarship and one summer trip to study in Moscow in SAU's exchange program with Moscow State Pedagogical University. The theme for the Walz History Essay contest is `Triumph or Tragedy in History.' The Walz contest encourages (but does not require) students to focus upon topics drawn from the history of the region served by Southern Arkansas University. The contest is funded by an endowment established by Mrs. Curtistine A. Walz to honor her husband, Dr. Robert B. Walz, a long-time professor of history at SAU.
