October 6 Is Deadline For Voter Registration

Published Wednesday, October 2, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

Arkansans who are not registered to vote, but would like to be eligible to vote by the November 5 general election, must apply to register by October 6, according to Secretary of State Sharon Priest.

Registering to vote is now more convenient, due in part to the National Voter Registration Act, which is also known as the `motor voter' program.

The act, which was mandated by Congress in 1993 and went into effect in Arkansas in 1996, gives citizens more places to apply to register to vote. For example, Arkansans can apply to register to vote whenever they apply for or renew driver's licenses or state identification cards. The Department of Motor Vehicles is fully automated to implement NVRA statewide.

Applications to regiser to vote also are available at your local county clerk's office, the Secretary of State's office or at numerous state agencies, including public libraries, the Arkansas State Library and the schools for the deaf and blind. These applications can be completed and mailed to the Secretary of State's office.

Applications must be postmarked no later than October 6.

For more inforamtion, contact the Secretary of State's Elections Division at 501-682-5070.
