Coaches Attend Seminar

Published Wednesday, October 9, 1996 in the Gurdon Times

Team Sports Medicine, a division of Team Rehabilitation Center, recently conducted a Heat Illness Awareness seminar for area coaches and athletes.

John Wayne Smith, M.D., initiated the program with a discussion of the body's response to increased heat, followed by an outlining of the heat exposure syndromes by Norene Skyler, exercise physiologist.

W. Michael Garrett, M.D., then spoke on the emergency resonse to heat illness and W. Allen Mount, ACT, concluded the evening with some practical information regarding the prevention of heat related illnesses in athletes.

Representatives from twelve area schools were in attendance and all rated the context of the program as excellent.

Greg Meggers of Hot Springs said: "We picked up some information today. Some of it seems like common sense, but since we really don't deal with heat problems but once a year, it's good to have old ideas reinforced as well as new ones explained."
