Books Added To Amity LibraryPublished Wednesday, October 9, 1996 in the Gurdon Times"Building a bridge with books" was the theme of the recent purchase of approximately 200 volumes of fiction, biographies, plays and poetry for the Amity High School Library. The purchase was funded by a $2,000 grant from the Cabe Foundation of Gurdon, according to media specialist Billie Taylor. The titles were specifically selected from reading lists supplied by the English departments of Henderson State University and Ouachita Baptist University. "About forty percent of our graduates go on to college," Taylor said. "Almost 100% of that number attend either Henderson or Ouachita. "College instructors have voiced concerns that in-coming freshmen have little or no knowledge of current novels, biographies, autobiographies, poetry or other pertinent works now in use in their colleges. "This collection will familiarize our students with college-level materials," Taylor continued. "They will now be able to read many exact titles prior to entering college. This collection will bridge the gap from high school to college." Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
