Mullins Earns International Recognition

Published Wednesday, July 28, 1999 in the Gurdon Times

The International Baccalaureate (IB) program headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, has announced that Jessica Mullins of Garland, Texas, has achieved full diploma recognition.

This program offers a challenging four-year comprehensive program of study above the advanced placement level while in high school, followed by extensive testing. Many colleges and universities recognize the IB diploma as being equivalent to the freshman year in college.

The program, in addition to academics, stresses understanding and sensitivity towards others and requires extensive community service.

Mullins graduated with honors as part of the class of 1999 at Garland High school, serving as a representative on the Student Council, a member of the honors band, the Esprit de Corps (honor marching band), vice president and librarian of the three GHS bands, a member of the Spanish Honor Society, and the National Honor Society.

While at GHS, Mullins was the winner of the district science fair and received special awards in physics at the regional science fair. Additional awards include superintendent's scholar, National Merit commended student, Texas scholar and the President's Education award.

Mullins was elected as youth executive and served on the Youth Council of the North Texas Area of the Christian Church, representing the area of leadership seminars and assisting with Christian Youth Fellowship at the area and local church level, and volunteering with Habitat for Humanity and Crop Walk.

She will attend Texas Christian University (TCU) in Fort Worth, where she was awarded a Dean's Scholarship for outstanding academic achievement. Mullins will be the fourth generation of her family to attend TCU.

She is the daughter of Jack and Sherry Reynolds Mullins of Garland and the granddaughter of Francis Reynolds and the late J.O. Reynolds Jr. of Gurdon.
