DeQueen Next PHS Conference FoePublished Wednesday, October 9, 1996 in the Nevada County PicayunePrescott's loss to Nashville Friday should change nothing as far as the Curley Wolves are concerned. Oh, sure, their 17-game winning streak came to a close. However, the ultimate goal is to get into the state play-offs and win the title again. It still can be done -- one game at a time. This week the Wolves will host De Queen at the PHS stadium; therefore, Prescott must concentrate on this game and not lament the loss to Nashville. There are still four conference games left and Prescott must face each opponent one at a time. The Curley Wolves must remember: to get revenge this year against Nashville, they must get into the state play- offs. The only way to do this is to win. Preparing for each game is a must. Advice for the Wovles would be: take one game at a time; don't let the Leopards or any other conference team slip up on you; face each with determination; you'll get your chance at the Scrappers again, just be prepared for it. While the loss was a big one for the Wolves, it was nothing for them to be ashamed. No other team in this area has done as good against Nashville. With just a few different turns, a few less mistakes, a few corrections and it could have been a different story. Prepare now to make it different in the play-offs. The Wovles learned Friday night that Nashville's defense is better than last year's and the Scrappers' running game is much improved. Their offensive line also showed improvement, but still Nashville quarterback Jared McBride was hit again and again. More than one pass completion was made with McBride going down. McBride knew where the pass was going, and his receivers, for the most part, was there to get it. Forget Nashville for now. Prescott must face the Redbugs. Fordyce now has two wins in the conference race, therefore, the Redbugs lead it. Nashville and De Queen each have one win and no losses in the conference and follow Fordyce. This, more than likely, will change Friday night as Nashville will host Fordyce and Prescott and De Queen pair off. And Nashville has yet to play De Queen (this year at De Queen). Although unlikely, Nashville could get knocked off by either team. De Queen's lone conference victory was against Fouke, a team that doesn't need to be overlooked. Although Fouke is a newcomer to the 7AA Conference and to Class AA in particular, they have won three games outside the conference. While Nashville was proving they are number one in the state last week, De Queen was handling Lamar (4AA West, 1-4), 42-22. De Queen has been defeated by Mena (the leader in the 4AA West Conference), Stamps (7A West), and Murfreesboro (7A West). The Leopards' other win was against Fountain Lake, a conference foe that Prescott will travel to next week. The Leopards have played some tough teams, just as Prescott has. Just because Stamps and Murfreesboro are Class A schools doesn't mean they're soft. On the contrary, Murfreesboro is 5-0 and has out-scored its opponents, 163-40; Stamps is 3-2. The Wolves will certainly have their work cut out for them Friday, then. De Queen comes in off a victory and Prescott faces them after a loss. But the Wolves can do it. The team is not a quiter. As the old addage says, "When things get tough, the tough get going." They will win Friday night. Games of importance to Prescott fans last week:
Bismarck and Fouke both are new to Class AA, but both are putting up strong battles against the big names. Either may be able to help Prescott by defeated an opponent. Wouldn't that be nice? Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
