Annual Garden Club Meeting SetPublished Wednesday, October 9, 1996 in the Nevada County PicayuneThe annual meeting of the Southwest District of Arkansas Federation of Garden Clubs will be held October 15 at Christ of the Hills Methodist Church in Hot Springs Village with Village Pines Garden Club as host. Betty Shellstrom is chairman of the event. Registration and coffee will begin at 8:30 a.m. followed by a business meeting at 9:30 with Janice Cannedy, Southwest District director, presiding. State president Jeanette Golden of Lake Village will address the group and special reports will be given by other state officers and chairmen. A highlight of the morning session will be two-minute reports by club presidents regarding their clubs' achievements and projected activities for the club year. A speech contest for high school students on the topic "Safeguarding the Land We Love" will be conducted under the supervision of Betty MacCammond, AFGC speech chairman, of Hot Springs Village. The first place winner of the contest will give the winning speech to the garden club members preceding the lunch break and will represent the district in the state speech contest during the AFGC annual convention next March. The afternoon session will feature Yvonne Becker, who will speak on the topic "Introduction to Orchids." Mrs. Becker grows 300 species of orchids and will have slides and many of her orchids to share with the group.
