Friday Foe Is New To 7AA Conference

Published Wednesday, October 16, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

This week the Curley Wolves will take on a new foe in the 7AA Conference, the Fountain Lake Cobras.

What about Fountain Lake? Last Saturday they defeated Class AAA Lake Hamilton, 52-40. They have also defeated Jessieville, Lewisville and Fouke. The Cobras are 4-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

Last year Fountain Lake played in the 5AA Conference. Before that the Cobras were in the 5A Conference. This school district, like others around Hot Springs, is growing.

The Cobras don't have that bad of a team this year. We believe that Prescott is a lot better, but all in all the Cobras have been giving their opponents a rough way to go. Just as Bismarck has.

For most of the ballgame two weeks ago, Bismarck led Fordyce in a big way. Only in the final period were the Redbugs able to come from four touchdowns down to win. Last week they trounced Fouke, another newcomer to Class AA, 29-18. And, even though Prescott never let them score in their game, they were a very tough team to put down.

The Nashville Scrappers have moved up in state rankings, according to the Arkansas Democrat. Sunday they ranked the Scrappers 10th in the state overall after a solid 52-15 beating of Fordyce. They remain number one in Class AA.

Prescott remains number four in Class AA. Oscello is second (3AA North with a 4-1 record) and Pine Bluff Dollarway is third (8AA with a record of 3-2).

Prescott's only loss has been to 7AA foe Nashville. When the two teams meet in the play-offs, the Curley Wolves are capable of getting revenge.

Prescott's 31-13 victory over De Queen last week was a solid thrashing, in spite of the two TD's the Leopards scored. Prescott handled them easy enough, coming off the Nashville loss.

The rebound by Prescott did show a team down, however. There were a lot of mistakes in the game. Several penalties that could have been prevented were called against the Wolves, and the team had four turnovers.

Mistakes like these will not get Prescott a win against Nashville in their next meeting. As far as that goes, these mistakes won't let Prescott get to meet Nashville again. Any team, especially those Prescott will meet in the play-offs, should be able to take advantage of such mistakes and turn them into positive action for themselves. The Wolves should prepare now for that meeting down the road.

Friday's game saw several new faces in the backfield for the Wolves. These `new players' need this experience and Coach Eddie Jackson rightly puts them in when his team gets a big lead. Their Friday night performance looked good.

Opponents of Prescott playing last week:

  • Junction City won its second game. The Dragons defeated Rison Woodlawn, 49-6. Prescott will travel to Junction City next week.

  • Fouke, Prescott's homecoming opponent November 1, was defeated by Bismarck, 29-18.

  • Fordyce was defeated by Nashville, 52-15. The Redbugs will come to Prescott on Thursday, November 7.

In other games of interest to Prescott fans:

  • Camden Harmony Grove ended Rison's 20-game winning streak, 21-0. It sure is nice that Harmony Grove is not on Prescott's schedule anymore.

  • Hope was defeated, 42-21, by Malvern.

  • Ashdown was defeated by Hot Springs, 14-0.

  • Hot Springs Lakeside edged Lake Hamilton, 13-12.

  • Gurdon took another loss, this time to Stamps, 28-15.

Fans are urged to go to Fountain Lake this Friday to support the Curley Wolves.
