Early Voting Encouraged

Published Wednesday, October 16, 1996 in the Gurdon Times

The Arkansas Association of County Clerks announced October 11 an effort to encourage Arkansans to take advantage of the early voting process during the year's election.

"Under a new law passed last year, it is easier than ever to vote early," Crawford County Clerk Patti Hill, the president of the association, said.

Early voting begins Monday, October 21, which is 15 days prior to election day.

In order to cast a ballot, a voter simply needs to go to the courthouse during regular business hours and ask to vote early. No excuse is required.

The paperwork normally associated with absentee voting is no longer necessary to vote early in this process, although the forms are still required in order to absentee by mail.

The clerks cited several reasons to vote early:

  • The ballot will be long this year with 13 candidates for President and many constitutional amendments.

  • The long ballot will create lines at polling places on election day, as people take time to read the ballot when they vote.

  • The weather could be bad on election day.

  • You can vote at your convenience.

Some county clerks are planning extended hours to allow more people to vote early. For more infomation about office hours in Clark County, call Lynda Franklin at 246-1491.
