Mistakes Haunt Go-Devils As Stamps Posts Victory (cont)BY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, October 16, 1996 in the Gurdon Times y after the kickoff went out of bounds giving the Devils the ball at their 35. But Toland's pass to Hatley was picked off by Seamster and brought back to the 19. Gurdon was also flagged for an illegal block, moving the ball to the 15. Stamps needed six plays to put the finishing touches on Gurdon for the night, as Joseph scored for the third time, this one on a sweep. The PAT split the uprights and the 'Jackets led 28-9. Gurdon mounted its final drive, keeping the ball the remaining 1:41 of the contest. Starting at the Devil 44, Eric Allen, who replaced Toland under center, moved the team down field in a drive requiring eight plays. Allen found himself sacked on the Stamps 30 after the blocking broke down. Pace called his final time out with one second showing on the clock. Allen returned, barked out the signals, took the snap, dropped back and let the ball fly deep. The pigskin found its way between a host of Stamps defenders into the arms of a friendly Gurdon player for the score. The point after was blocked, but the Devils had shown they could move the ball in a hurry, though they succumbed to Stamps 28- 15. Interestingly, the scoreboard was the only place Gurdon lost the game, as they posted better stats than the 'Jackets. In passing, Gurdon was six of 15 for 113 yards and two touchdowns, but giving up three interceptions. Stamps was four of eight for 44 yards. While the Devils didn't punt once during the game, Stamps booted the ball four times for 131 yards, allowing 23 return yards. This gave the 'Jackets a net of 108 yards punting. Gurdon also posted 13 first downs to 12 for Stamps. Unfortunately, the Devils also lost three of five fumbles, while the 'Jackets gave up one of two. Both squads were flagged eight times, with Gurdon losing 40 yards and Stamps being nailed for 53 in penalties. Stamps ran 51 plays to Gurdon's 46, but the Devils had a total of 272 yards, while the 'Jackets could only manage 145. Gurdon's ground attack netted 159 yards to Stamps' 101. M. Charles was the leading ground gainer for Gurdon with 89 yards on 17 carries. K. Hughes was next with 43 yards on two carries, while Thomas hauled the mail five times for 30 yards. The Devils had 31 rushing plays for 159 yards and a 5.13 yard per carry average. Stamps, on the other hand, had 43 rushing plays for 101 yards and a 2.35 yard per carry average. Gurdon will be on the road Friday night as the Devils travel to Lewisville for a date with the Red Devils. The Lewisville squad is 0-6 on the season and has shown no offense at all, and little defense. Foreman posted a 27-14 win over the Red Devils Friday night. Lewisville has scored 47 points this season, while giving up 270. In other 7A-West games, Murfreesboro blanked Dierks 34-0, and Mineral Springs posted a 19-0 shutout against Horatio.
