The Arthritis Foundation announces the release of a new aquatic exercise videotape for people with fibromyalgia, "Let's get F.I.T." produced in cooperation with Spring/Rothhammer International, the tape teaches people exercise to help them manage pain and stiffness while building stamina and cardiovascular fitness.

"Regular exercise is an important part of an overall treatment plan for someone with fibromyalgia. It can help improve a person's ability to manage pain and fatigue and maintain function in daily living," said Christopher Adams, M.D. Chairman of the Medical and Scientific Committee of the Arthritis Foundation, Arkansas Chapter. "Many people with fibromyalgia may find it easier to exercise in water than on land, because the buoyancy of the water significantly reduces stress on sensitive parts of the body."

The F.I.T. program provides a 40-minute workout that allows people to control the length and the intensity of each session based on their level of energy. The exercises are clear and simple, they include posture and stretches, strenghtening exercises for the upper and lower body and an endurance component.

"This exercise video is not intended for self-diagnosis or self-treatment," cautioned Adams. "It can serve as a guide to offer information and exercise suggestions to help control fatigue, pain and an improved quality of life."

Fibromyalgia is one of the most common arthritis-related diseases, affecting about 3.7 million Americans. The complex disorder is characterized by widespread pain and decreased pain threshold or tender points. People with fibromyalgia often experience fatigue, distrubed sleep, stiffness and sometimes psychological stress. The Arthritis Foundation recommends that people who experience these symptoms should contact their doctor.

Cost for the F.I.T. videotap is $29.95 ($22.50 for Arthritis Foundation members), plus $4.00 shipping and handling. To order, call the Arthritis Foundation toll-free, 1-800-933-0032.
