Gurdon's Allen Enlists In ArmyPublished Wednesday, October 23, 1996 in the Gurdon TimesLaketric K. Allen has joined the United States Army under the Delayed Enlistment Program at the U.S. Army Recruiting Station in Hot Springs. The Delayed Enlistment Program gives young men and women the opportunity to delay enlistment into the army for up to one year before reporting to basic military training. The enlistment gives the new soldier the option to learn a new skill, travel and become eligible to receive as much as $30,000 toward a college education. After completion of basic training, soldiers receive advanced individual training in their career specialty. Allen, a student at Gurdon High School, will report to Fort Jackson near Columbia, S.C., for military basic training May 29, 1997. She is the daughter of Charlene Allen and Tommy C.
